How to cleanup Winsxs Directory on Windows 2008 64-bit

Hello there! I need some assistance on how to cleanup Winsxs Directory on Windows 2008 64-bit. I am running Windows 2008 Server STD SP1. The C: is worth 100GB and 50Gb of it is occupied by C:WindowsWinsxs. I have learned that there are certain commands to clean this folder such as “vsp1cln.exe” for Windows 2008 SRV with SP1 and “compcln.exe” for Windows 2008 SRV with SP2 but I have never used these commands. I just want to know if it’s safe to use these commands and what are the problems I might encounter should I use them. I hope you can help me. Thank you.

Hi,

You really don’t need to cleanup Winsxs Directory on Windows 2008 64-bit. It is hardly necessary to clean this directory C:WindowsWinsxs. This folder contains a lot of files but it takes very small memory space. The thing to remember that this folder “C:WindowsWinsxs” contains only list of linked program not a huge amount of arithmetical or logical data.

Other thing is those files really don’t take memory space to other folders. It only stays one time on that drive. So if you take a close look you will see that those huge amounts of files engaged a very little amount of memory space as the folder properties shows.
