How to properly install Microsoft SQL 2008 Server?

I want to install Microsoft SQL 2008 Server but I fail each time when I try. I currently use 2005 Server but I would like to upgrade to 2008. The installation continues till the last step and I end up with a error, 'One or more devices connected to the system has malfunctioned…' How can I fix this error?

If you want to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and you have Windows Server 2005, unfortunately, it is not possible. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 does not support your operating system. If you want to install it, you need to be using either Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. But since Windows Server 2003 is old then it is not recommended to downgrade your operating system.

If you have plans on upgrading your operating system to Windows Server 2008 then it is the best thing to do. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 supports Windows Server 2008 Standard [with or without Hyper-V] both 32-bit and 64-bit, Windows Server 2008 Web 32-bit only, Windows Server 2008 Data Center [without or without Hyper-V] both 32-bit and 64-bit, and Windows Server 2008 Enterprise [with or without Hyper-V] both 32-bit and 64-bit.

I don’t think you will have a problem with the processor because Microsoft SQL Server 2008 works on Intel Pentium 3 1.0 GHz minimum. You also need to install MDAC or Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 SP1 and Microsoft Windows Installer 4.5 or higher.
