What is DNS and how is it useful?

I am trying to learn some basic network troubleshooting and I came across something called DNS.

It was the first time I heard about it so I was wondering what a DNS is?

I've searched it online but can't seem to understand the description.

Can someone explain it in layman's term please?

What is DNS and how is it useful?

DNS or Domain Name System is the hierarichal or in order distributions of computer names or any resource connected to the Internet. In our explain daily life we could relate Domain Name System as the phone book for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia into IP addresses Internet Protocol address.  

Generally, the DNS also stores other types of information, such as the list of mail servers that accept e-mail  for a given Internet domain by providing a worldwide, distributed keyword-based redirection service, it is an essential component of the functionality of the Internet.

What is DNS and how is it useful?

Domain Name Service/System is used in data system to translate IP address to a domain name. It is designed remember the address easily rather than numbers.

In computing, computer world and networking, numbers are being use in bits and binary. For example, you go to a website like google.com, this has it's own DNS, whenever the DNS or IP address are called from server from your computer then it will display the website's content.

Instead of typing 74.125.71.104 in the address bar, in a numeric form, which is hard to remember and memorize, DNS will do the translation for you. It will display the Google website the same as putting the google.com in the address bar.

It converse and reverse DNS IP address into domain.
