The differences are huge among those processors. As it is not possible to discuss about that in detail here, I would definitely like to give you a brief.

1. The first vital difference remains in the socket; the Dual Core and Core 2 Duo processors are socket 775 and the Core i3 and i7 use socket 1156 (i7 also has a socket 1366 in some cases). Socket 775 use more power and produces more heat than socket 1156. Socket 775 are DDR2 (very few have DDR3) but socket 1156 and 1366 only use DDR3.

2. In case of performance, the socket 775 (Dual core and Core 2 Duo) has 2 cores and 2 threads while the Core i3 has 2 cores and 4 threads while i7 has 2, 4 or 6 cores (depending on the model). Generally, an Intel Core i7 processor can run 4 processes and 8 threads at the same time on its 4 cores.

3. The Dual Core or Core 2 Duo processor doesn’t support Hyper-Threading Technology like i3, i5 and i7.

4. Only core i5 and i7 processors have the turbo boost technology for gaming and graphics works where Dual Core or Core 2 Duo does not have this.

5. A bus technology named FSB (Front Side Bus) which is used in Core 2 Duo or Dual Core processor and earlier. Whereas the i3, i5 and i7 use DMI (Direct Media Interface) bus technology which increases the performance drastically than Dual Core or Core 2 Duo.

6. L3 cache is also very important for best performance of a computer. The higher the L3 cache memory, the better the performance. In Dual Core L3 cache memory is limited to 2mb where Core 2 Duo may have 2, 3, 4 or 6mb L3 cache. An i3 may have 3 or 4mb L3 cache where an i7 may have 4, 6, 8 or 12mb L3 cache memory.

I suggest if you usually do graphic publishing or any graphical task, programming and compilation, music creation, watch HD movies and love to play high detail games, please do buy an i5 or i7. And for the very best hardware with performance, 

Please get an i7 Extreme which is very costly indeed.
