My android phone is not working properly and I am scared it might be infected with a virus.
But I am not sure if it’s possible, or what to do if it happens. Can android phones get viruses and stop working?

Can Android Phones Get Viruses And Stop Working?

A virus basically just means a program which keeps attaching itself to other programs and thus increases in number. The most frequent users of this are hackers. It’s used for PCs and thus android phones do not normally have something called an android virus, but there could be other things which may infect an android phone. The broader term is malware.
If you think you regularly download things on your phone, the possibility of a virus is high.
Get it checked by a software personnel.
