About Samba4 on Fedora 11

Hi Guys,
Has anyone experimented with Samba4 on Fedora 11? I want to give it a whirl in a virtual machine and I am having trouble getting started.
I've pretty much worn out Google, and searched this forum as well, trying to find some examples with no success thus far. I've found a few things with Fedora 10 and compiling Samba4 source code.

I have a functioning up-to-date Fedora 11 virtual machine on VMware. I see RPM packages for Samba4 for Fedora 11 in some of the repositories. The current RPM for Fedora 11 seems to be 4.0.0 alpha 7. The confusing thing is I only see one package: a 21K (yes, only 21K) package called samba4-4.0.0-15alpha7.fc11.x86_64.rpm. I feel certain this can't be the only samba4 package. Trying "yum install samba4" results in it installing the 21K package listed and one other perl dependency package.

What gives? Where are the other Samba4 packages? Is the single 21K package all there is? If so, how do I get things working?

About Samba4 on Fedora 11

The 21K package called samba4-4.0.015alpha7.fc11.x86_64.rpm refers to the alpha release of fedora 11 package. If you try installing it then it will surely create some problems ( as alpha release contains bugs ). Check you repository settings to make sure that you don't receive alpha or beta testing packages.

The command to check installed samba packages on you system is-"yum list installed | grep samba". This command will list all of the packages. You can upgrade or install any new packages on your system for this you use "yum install <package-name>".

About Samba4 on Fedora 11

Hi,

Fedora 11 has become outdated. I think you should try it with a newer version of fedora like fedora 17. You cannot upgrade directly from fedora 11 to fedora 17. So you will have to uninstall the previous version by formatting the partition and then install the new version which you can get from their website fedora-project.org. You can also create a live USB for this and install it from there. I hope this helped.

Hello Jasontait,

Unfortunately for you that only 21k package of Samba4 is available till date.

What you can try now is –

1. Open Samba4 cvs repository for Fedora,

2. Find out samba4.spec file from the source,

3. In this file, make sure all sub-packages are disabled.

Hi,

Well, currently only the 21k package is available to download. In the spec file, I saw that all sub-packages are disabled.

On the official link to fedora and samba4, I’ve notice that there is a beta4 release that you can try.

You can get the following git repository https://fedorapeople.org/cgit/abbra/public_git/samba4.git/ within fedorapeople.org
