Why I can’t use the ALT + 164 to insert “ñ” in my word document?

I am using Microsoft Office 2003 to encode names in a document. I have encounter a name containing “ñ” on his name. I am using the trick ALT + decimal value of the character to insert the character but at this time it doesn’t work. Why? Please help me to find other alternative for this issue.

Why I can’t use the ALT + 164 to insert “ñ” in my word document?

Instead of reasoning or giving you the full details while the issue occurs, I will give you an alternative solution for this issue.

By the way, the issue occurs only if you are using an uninstalled Microsoft Office Word application. Uninstalled means a program that is not installed into your operating system or a Portable Microsoft Office applications. I don’t really know the reason why but it is maybe because of the dynamic link libraries used by the Office applications.

Here’s the solution for your problem. You can create those characters by just combining characters from your keyboard. Like for example, the character “ñ” contains two characters, the tilde (~) and “n”. Tilde (~) was on the top and “n” on the bottom. Here’s the procedure to combine the characters.

But before that let me show you first how to get the tilde character, the tilde character is located in the upper case of apostrophe (`).The tilde key therefore is the upper case of apostrophe so we need to hold the SHIFT key plus the apostrophe. Just like getting the ampersand (&), by holding the SHIFT key plus the “7” key on your keyboard. Now let’s go to the process:
Hold down the CTRL key. (This is the key for the process)
Hold down the Shift key then press the apostrophe (`) key. Please do not hold the apostrophe key just press once. (we are getting the tilde character)
Now release from holding the CTRL key.
Then tap the N key. (getting the “n” character)

Note: Holding the SHIFT key resulting to changing the case of the key. Alpha characters goes into capital letters and Number keys (not on the keypad) goes to the character on the upper case of the key.

This is the other alternative solution for this issue.

In your MS office search  the word "insert" it is in  along with "file, view,edit, etc". Then under the menu of insert there is a word symbol, click that and search for the letter ñ , then click it.

Hello,

An alternative way for inserting "ñ" in your document is through the INSERT tab in Microsoft Word. Choose "Insert" from the menu tabs (menu tabs are located at uppermost left of the window). Select "Symbol", and then find and choose "ñ" among the symbols displayed and click "Insert".

The name of this sign is tilde. Which is marked top of the small letter n like "ñ".You have told that why you can't use the ALT+164 to insert "ñ" in word document. If you have to be wanted to inscribe this tilde sign then you must go to Insert menu of MS word . After it you will be capable to write tilde sign on your MS word document.

Click on Insert menu. Click on Symbol. You will got Symbol dialog box. There you will see Font field and Subset field. You have to required to write Sim Sun in the Font field and you also have to write Latin-1 in the Subset field. Click on symbol ñ and Insert. Of course you should have to open a new page to make your MS word document.
