Hi Cgabriel,

Here is a brief description of each; which differentiates one from the other.

Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) comes with Windows server and you don’t have to pay separately. WSS is not a portal but it is only a collaborative platform as there is no publishing feature in WSS. But still this is a good choice for small companies.

On the other hand Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) comes as a separate product with a licensing model that includes both Server-Side and client side. MOSS has built on top of WSS and expensive compared to WSS. MOSS provides additional capabilities for medium and large scale companies for collaboration, portal, enterprise content management and business processes.

Microsoft SharePoint Designer (MSD) is a free program for designing and customizing Web sites which runs on SharePoint Foundation (SPF) and SharePoint Server. Using SharePoint Designer you can create rich Web pages, build powerful workflow enabled solutions.

Hope this helps to understand what each means and how each of these differentiates.

(I am a Software Test Lead working for next SharePoint release as a vendor for Microsoft and happy to help you)
