There are a quite a number of applications available for iPhone that enables instantaneous messaging. Some of them are for free when downloaded via iTunes.
You can try to download Ping chat, Whatsapp messenger, Skype, Tango, Viber and Talkbox. Most of them are for free except Whatsapp messenger. You only have to make sure that your friends also have the same application installed on their device and you should be good to go. Those applications are always online and connected given that you have internet access always available. You can receive both chat messages and calls on some of them.
