You don’t need any extra software to achieve this. You’ll be able to do this by using already existing software’s in your computer. MP4 is video format so play the video in any of the latest video players installed on your computer, now a day’s most of the video players have the screen capture capability. If you don’t have such a player installed, Download and install KMPlayer. It’s free and very good player which supports many video formats.

After you install the player play the video then right click on the screen. Do the following steps:

Capture > Frame: What you see > Save as JPG.

Videos are different from pictures and they vary by format. Videos can be in MP4 (*.mp4), M4V (*.m4v), AVI (*.avi), MPG (*.mpg), WMV (*.wmv), MKV (*.mkv), or 3GP (*.3gp) format. While videos can be converted from one format to another, converting it into pictures is another thing.

You can take a screenshot of the current frame in a video but converting the entire video into pictures would require using an application that would extract frames from the video and saving them as images. You can do this with VLC media player. To try this, start VLC then go to “Tools” then “Preferences” or press CTRL + P.

On the next screen, at the bottom left corner of the window under “Show settings”, select “All”.

VLC show all settings
VLC show all settings

Next, expand “Video”, “Filters” then select “Scene filter”. On the right, in “Image format”, set the image format like without quotes “bmp”, “jpg”, “png”, and others. In “Directory path prefix”, enter the path to the folder where you want to save the images or leave it blank to save the images in your Pictures folder. In “Recording ratio”, enter the ratio.

The ratio will save an image every xx number of frames. So, if your video is 30 frames per second (30 fps), a value of 150 will save an image every 5 seconds. Next, select “Filters” then on the right check “Scene video filter” and click “Save”.

VLC activate Scene video filter

Now, play the video in VLC media player and the images should automatically start saving.
