What is a wpd document

WPD files or files that are using the “.wpd” extension name are files created from WordPerfect which was developed by Satellite Systems International in 1980. It is historically the most popular file format used during those times which can still be opened by nearly all versions of Microsoft Office Word.

Unfortunately, the development of WordPerfect for Mac and DOS were discontinued in 1997 though the Windows version is still continuously being developed by Corel, its current owner. WordPerfect was the top selling word processing application throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. For your information, WordPerfect has already been acquired twice.

The first company who bought it was Novell and that was in 1994. The second company and currently the last company who purchased it was Corel and that happened in 1996, 2 years after it was acquired by Novell.
