Plugging the ethernet cable will make my computer shutdown

Hey there TechyV Experts,

There is an issue back at our home computer. Whenever I connect the Ethernet cable, my computer will suddenly shutdown. This happens every time, so I decided to buy another Ethernet cable. Sadly, same thing happens.

I would like to know what causes this and what should I do to fix this.

Hi,

Does your computer initiates normal shutdown or just turn off automatically?

If computer initiates normal shutdown it may be due to a virus, spyware or problem with your network drivers. Try scanning your computer with updated virus guard anti – spyware and reinstalling / upgrading network drivers.

If computer turns off suddenly without initiating normal shutdown, then it may be a hardware issue. Try out following.

1. Check NIC in device manager for any IRQ problems (If any error visible, may be a hardware problem)

2. Check whether computer and Router / Modem connected are grounded properly.

3. Check Ethernet cable for any short circuits, Connect Ethernet cable to another computer and check. If same problem arise try replacing the cable.

4. Plug your NIC card to another computer and check. If same happens there may be a problem with your NIC card.  Fix a new NIC card to your computer.

Hello,

To my knowledge there is no direct connection between Ethernet cable and shutdown.

What could have happened is that an overload of power supply could have caused damage to few parts along with Ethernet card. You can opt for a PCI Ethernet card which you can just plug in after turning off the onboard Ethernet.

Or you can diagnose your computer with an hardware expert.

There are different reasons why a computer suddenly shuts down or sometimes suddenly restarts even if you didn’t press on the reset button on the CPU. Anyway, my recommendation is pay a visit this Techyv post. Here you will get more helpful information.
