Safari usually imports bookmarks from your internet browser whether it is from Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape Navigator.

However, if the bookmark files in your browser are moved to a different location from its default, the automatic transfer will not happen.

  • Mozilla/Netscape's bookmark directory: /Library/Mozilla/Profiles/default/bookmarks.html
  • IE's bookmark directory: /Library/Preferences/Explorer/Favorites.html

Here are the steps to import your bookmarks manually from the old browser:

  1. Move the bookmark files back to the default directory
  2. Go to Terminal  – /Applications/Utilities/
  3. Then type "defaults delete com.apple.Safari NetscapeAndMozillaFavoritesWereImported"
  4. Press Return.
  5. Type "defaults delete com.apple.Safari IEFavoritesWereImported"
  6. Press Return.
  7. Exit Terminal.
  8. Go to Safari.

I don't think anyone has used Netscape since Nov 2008.

You might need to EXPORT the bookmarks from other sources first. Let's try IE for instance:

IE browser –

1. Click FILE, then IMPORT AND EXPORT

2. (radio button) EXPORT A FILE – Click NEXT button.

3. (checkbox) FAVORITES – Click NEXT button.

4. Select your folder – Click NEXT button.

5. Type a path or Browse to the correct file. – Click EXPORT.

Most browsers are easier than IE, so I included it here.

You might want to try IMPORTING all your bookmarks to a web app like Grazely or Delicious because your bookmarks will always be accessible from any computer, and any browser.

If you need help with another browser, just ask. Good luck!
