How do I recover rm Mac files?

I have a 13 inch Retina Display MacBook Pro that has a 2.6 GHz Dual Core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, Intel Graphics HD 4000 and OSx Mountain Lion.  I think I deleted my address book using rm -rf /*.  Mac also seems sluggish.  How do I recover rm mac files that were deleted?

Hey Carol, Hello there.

So carol it seems you have deleted some important files of yours, I too did this thing once and believe me I was disheartened and now I feel the same for you. Because there is no way according to my knowledge, but when I searched / asked about this in forums they referred a big process which includes re-installing OS something like that, But I never tried that as I was afraid.

So there is no way to get those files back, I guess.
