There are different ways for IPad and IPhone4:

IPad:

These settings are for the apple IPad and there is another way for connecting for apple iPhone4 users. This issue is being faced by most of the users  can be solved by changing the output of video setting from PAL to NTSC.

This can be done in the apple device by connecting the AV cable to your TV and then go to SETTINGS > GENERAL > TV OUT > TV SIGNAL and you will be able to select from PAL to NTSC. 

Setting the option to proper setting will fix the display issue.  The cable that should be used is the composite AV cable which will only support the TV signal. 

IPhone4:

In case of the iPhone4 this issue can be solved, a genuine composite AV cable or a Apple digital AV adapter has to connected with the phone and to a compatible TV, projector or other external display to view your contents.

IPhone4 is compatible with 720p resolution; this has to be set in the external source.

There is no “TV OUT” setting on the phone for using composite cables hence select the correct TV input and set the resolution as 720p in case of iPhone4 and for iPhone4 it is 1080p.
