I am also a gamer myself but with all the games I played on the computer I have never experienced having a DirectX error while playing. You can update the current version of DirectX installed on your computer but it depends on the version of your operating system. DirectX 9 is supported on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

This is the latest version that is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP. DirectX 10 is supported on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. DirectX 11 is supported on Windows 7 and Windows 8 but it can also be installed on Windows Vista after installing a platform update which is available in x86 and x64 versions.

So, since I think you are using Microsoft Windows Vista, you don’t need to install either DirectX 9 or DirectX 10 because DirectX 10 ships with Microsoft Windows Vista while DirectX 9 is old. Your best option to upgrade DirectX is to install version 11 but you need to do a “platform update” to be able to install it.

If you have x86 Windows Vista, download and install Update for Windows Vista [KB971512]. If you have x64 Windows Vista, download and install Update for Windows Vista x64-based [KB971512]. After updating Windows Vista, download and install DirectX 11 from the Microsoft website.

Additionally, Microsoft has already announced DirectX 12 but it is not sure if it’ll be available as a downloadable update maybe until late 2015. DirectX 12 will be supported on Microsoft Windows 8 and later operating systems but it’s also not clear if it’ll be available for Windows 7.
