I am a father and knows just a little about this so-called router which provides an internet connection at home. I was planning to monitor data usage dlink router of my family at a certain point of time for references. Is there a certain process which I could follow to set up my goal?
Or a software to be downloaded?

You need not be a computer nerd to achieve that goal of yours. I am sure your Dlink router should have data tracking capabilities preinstalled. I'll advice you check your user manual or the installation software to confirm it does have.
If yours haven't, never mind. There are third party software's you could install to help you monitor your data. Some of these programs have various features; from tracking bandwidth usage to archiving sites visited. I propose you use Router Monitor 0.93 Beta as it will work perfectly with your Dlink router.
