Problematic Adobe Reader installation in Vista

Hey, guys!

I have just downloaded the final version of Adobe Reader from their website but during installation, two separate dialog boxes appeared. One said, “Error 1606: Could not access network location '%appdata%'” while the other was “Installation successful.  You are now running Reader x(10.1.0)."

However, it's still very problematic. I still can't use Adobe Reader to open any PDF files in my computer.

I eventually got hold of two possible ways to solve this. First is in KB886549 and the second was to make sure the registry files were working fine. I tried doing both but they were useless. I realized that it solved errors with Microsoft products but it completely ignored Adobe issues. Anyway, my operating system is Windows Vista Service Pack 2 if that helps.

Adobe has changed the way their products are downloaded. Before, basic applications like Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Acrobat can be downloaded as a standalone installer file. But now downloading any of these applications are quite different. After downloading let’s say Adobe Flash Player, you will only get the starter file. You must not disconnect from the internet before opening the downloaded file or else you will go back to downloading the file again. When launching the downloaded file, this starter program will be the one to download the files needed for the installation and then the installation will commence. The downloaded starter file is automatically deleted after the operation and you will not be able to find it anywhere in the hard drive not even in the recycle bin. Adobe made it more secure when downloading basic software from their site.

When downloading Adobe Reader, it already comes with Adobe Air. Be sure you are still connected to the internet when installing this application. These 2 applications are automatically installed so you don’t need to select which of them should be and should not be installed. You are not using the latest version of Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader X 10.1.2 is the latest version and already includes Adobe Air. Uninstall first your current version of Adobe Reader before installing the new version.
