A New 512-MB RAM appearing as 16 MB RAM

Due to slower speed of my computer, I have been told to extend the RAM. So, I have purchased a new 512-MB RAM, but when I installed it, it showed only an increase of 16 MB. How is it possible? When it is installed on another system it show complete 512 MB but why 16 MB in my computer.

Dear friend,

There is nothing wrong with your computer showing information are correct. This is the theory, if we take in roughly 1000 MB (Mega bytes ) = 1 GB ( Giga Bytes ) you computer display 1.16 GB RAM it means that you have a 1116 MB total RAM inside your computer. Your newly installed 512 RAM has detected and its working fine. Don't get Confused.

Hello dear friend,

Your system and RAM is all OK. Your problem is you got confused with MB and GB. MB is Mega byte and GB is Giga byte. Technically is 1GB=1024MB. When you bought yourself another 512 MB RAM, and added it along with previous one they both RAM then starts working as only one.

When you check the amount of your system’s RAM it shows you the combined value of the two rams. That’s why u got a total amount of 1.16 GB RAM. When you place it in another PC, it shows only its own amount. Your RAM and system both are OK there’s no problem at all.

Anytime you decide to upgrade your computer RAM remember isn’t at all times the answer to fixing up a slow PC. Sometimes your computer may not be able to pick up extra RAM, and this may slow down your computer at the end of the day.

Another thing one is supposed to consider is the type of RAM as there is DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) and SIMM (Single In-line Memory). As long as your computer is too old DIMM should be the right type.
