System R is a database management system which can provide a high level relational data interface. This system provides high level data independence. System R contains Relational Data System(RDS) and Relational Storage System(RSS) which are part of Relational databases. System R supports SQL which can be used by adhoc terminals or by programmers. System R contains domains refers to the set of possible values of an attribute which can act as constraints. Whereas relational database is database which contains tables and rows used for storing, retrieving purpose only.

System R is a database management system designed as a research project during the 1970s at the IBM San Jose Research which is now the IBM Almaden Research Centre. The research project actually started in 1974. It initiated the SQL language. System R later advanced into SQL/DS that soon after became DB2.

It is in the early 1980s when Oracle released the earliest commercial SQL database which is based on the System R specifications. The System R database management system is also called the IBM System R. It is a seminal project where the first implementation of SQL was done. Since then, it has become the standard relational data query language.

When System R was first released commercially, Pratt & Whitney was the first customer to buy it in 1977. Pratt & Whitney is an American aerospace manufacturer that has global or worldwide service operations and a subsidiary of UTC or United Technologies Corporation.
