Hi,

After installing a new NIC in a PC and connect it to an Ethernet patch cord from the NIC to a wall jack, the link lights are still off, what could be the problem here?

I am confused because after doing the above process, the light is supposed to be on.

Hi John,

The problem you have is very common. Since the link light is not lit, there is either an ethernet cable problem or ethernet networking is not functioning on your computer. To get this resolved, please try the following steps:

1. Powercycle your modem/router. This means you need to turn it off for about 5 to 10 seconds then turn it back on.

2. Reset the ethernet cord. Unplug both ends of the cord. One end should be connected to the back of the computer and the other end should be connected to the modem/router.

Note: For DSL/High-speed Internet, there is another cord coming from the walljack or telephone jack. This should be the same phone line that connects your modem/router to the Internet line/phone line. Please make sure you have at least 3 connections at the back of your modem/router: power, ethernet and phoneline/broadband

3. Enable NIC/ LAN on your computer. If you are not familiar and how to enable the NIC/LAN on your computer, kindly provide your Operating System so I could give additional steps for you.

I hope this helps!
