No, it might damage your system especially the hard disk. It is the most vulnerable part and more prone to be damage when the laptop is trembling in place.

Hi Chitochat,

You can carry your laptop while traveling, but you must put it in sleep mode. It keeps your session in memory and puts the laptop in a low-power state so that you can immediately resume working.

Yes it is safe to travel while it is on.

But don't put it into hibernate mode especially if your hard disk is encrypted because based on my experience if you do this, there is a chance that this might corrupt your operating system thus you have to re-image your laptop.

I don’t think there is a problem when travelling with your laptop running. You see, when the laptop is running and you close the lid without shutting down the computer, this action will automatically trigger the laptop to go to sleep mode. And when your laptop is in sleep mode, everything is not running.

In this state, the machine is still operating but at a very minimal state. In Microsoft Windows, there are two (2) sleep options available: Hibernate and Stand By. Stand By is the more traditional sleep mode. This type of sleep mode lowers down the power your computer uses to almost nothing.

When you’re in Stand By mode, the power to your peripheral devices, hard drive, and screen gets cut off but the power to your computer’s physical memory or the physical RAM remains allowing your files to stay open. In Hibernate, the computer saves an image of your desktop which includes all open files and windows and then it shuts down your computer.

In laptops, hibernate mode doesn’t happen automatically. You have to select it manually to activate it. On the other hand, standby mode is automatic. When you close the lid of your laptop, the machine will go to standby mode automatically.
