Make sure the steps you did in joining a domain is correct. Also, before joining your computer to a domain, make sure you have access to an Active Directory user including correct rights to join the domain. You also need the FQDN or the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the domain you want to connect to.

In case your Active Directory domain doesn’t correspond to a legitimate domain like for example domain.com, it is possible that your domain is in the form of “domainname.local” where it uses “.local” instead of the usual “.com” like most domains use. You also need to make sure that the DNS for the domain is setup properly.

To join a domain or to connect your computer to a domain, use the command without quotes “sudo domainjoin-cli join example.com Administrator”. Change “example.com” with your domain name and the “Administrator” with the correct username. After this you will then be prompted for the user’s password. Enter the user’s password.

If the password was accepted you will see the word SUCCESS displayed on the screen. Once you are accepted to the domain you need to reboot your computer. For the complete steps including some troubleshooting in case a problem arise, visit Likewise Open.
