Hi Palmer,

Yes, you can install SQL Server 2005 32-bit on your computer which has a 64-bit processor using Windows Vista SP1 64-bit because it supports the server that you are planning to install. To completely or fully understand more about SQL Server 2005 32-bit, I will give you all the requirements for installing:

  1. Monitor should have at least 1,024×768 pixel resolution or VGA
  2. MS mouse or any pointing device that is compatible is required
  3. SQL Server 2005 32 and 64 bit has the same network software requirements

Software and hardware requirements for SQL Server 2005 32-bit|:

  1. The processor type should be pentium 3 or more and the processor speed is minimum of 600MHz but 1 GHz or higher is recommended. Memory RAM  is minimum of 500mb but recommended is 1GB or higher
  2. And for more information about the requirements on installing SQL Server 2005 32 bit, you can visit the link below:

Yes, you can install SQL 2005 32bit server on vista 64 bit, BUT

It will be the express edition (sql) without the advanced services enabled.  Reason, Vista has IIS7 installed, and if you try for the advanced services you will receive the warnings for “IIS Feature Requirement” and “ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement”

This can be overcome by some simple steps.

Refer the instructions on this site.

Furthermore, if you are working with the SQL 2005 developer edition, than there is No issues, except the usual installation sometimes wacky stuff, which occurs very rarely. Most of the time the installation is very smooth
