Hello there! I recently installed a new version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version. The thing is I am having trouble obtaining an IP address using DHCP, however, I can connect using a fixed IP address. Windows is set to default to 169.X.X.X address and subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. The machine I am using has all the latest patches and its license is fully registered. Do you have any idea what could have happened to my system? I am looking forward to your response. Thank you.

Hello Corey,

Please read the solutions below to be able to solve your issue:

  • On your keyboard, just press key + R control and press enter
  • Next is click Internet and Network
  • And then hit network and sharing center
  • Make changes to adapter settings
  • Right click the adapter settings and choose properties
  • Remove the check in the internet protocol version 6 and click ok just like the image below:

Restart your computer for changes to take effect. I hope it might help. I solved my problem same as yours by doing that kind of solution. I'll be glad if you let me know what happened after trying my solution.

Try to check and make sure that your network's DHCP table has enough room to accommodate your machine. Many routers actually have a setting to limit the number of DHCP IP addresses that can be allocated. If it has all been used by other devices and systems, then your computer won't be able to get one. This may be true since when you create a static IP address instead, the computer is able to connect and can have traffic going to and from the network. You can also try and reset your TCP/IP stack by opening the command prompt, then typing in NETSH WINSOCK RESET CATALOG then restart the computer.

Hello Corey_Reed,

How many computers are there on the network that you are using? And are you using DHCP for all or you have configured static IP addressing for some of them?

You should make sure that you have configured the computer to obtain the IP address automatically under the network settings for the computer to work in the DHCP mode.

To confirm this, follow the procedure below:

On your computer in the task bar, locate the network identity icon and click on it, and then click on 'open network and sharing center'. Click on change adapter settings and then choose local area connection and right click on it, and then choose properties. Look for IPv4 settings and double click on it to open, and confirm if the settings have set to DHCP.
