What will happen if I plug in one end of a cat5 (RJ-45 Jack) cable into

my computer and then do nothing with the other end of the cable?

Will the red cross be still visible from my network adapters icon

(in win2000, winxp or vista)

Dear JimitPathak,

a disconnected cable in to your Network Interface Card has no effects because your NIC doesn't detect any data coming in.

Yes, the red cross will maintain visible as the NIC is not detecting activity,

The only way that could result is you to prepare an Ethernet loop back cable. But some cards don't let be fooled by this.

You can search this phrase:

Creating an RJ45 Ethernet loopback cable

To see how it can be built.

Best regards

Helllo JimitPathak,

The RJ 45 Jack on a computer allows a connection to the network therefore, if you unplug one end of it then you will not be able to connect to the internet at all. This may also interrupt any network processes so if you are doing something with the network then it will abort the current operation.

Furthermore, this will make the red cross visible from your wireless icon until you get connection again.

This should answer your question.

Puckett
