I have to save a variety of files, such as photos, Word, and Excel documents. I will probably need to save a Power Point as well. I want to ensure I don't lose my work, so is Google Docs a good place for this? Am I able to save all of my work there and not just Word or Excel? Thank you for your help.

Yes of course, you can easily create & save a wide range of files including photos, word documents, excel spreadsheets, and power point presentations in the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides home screens.
Further more, it is possible to edit, share, and work on all these files with others as well.
