Hi

Currently I have Win XP on my PC and am thinking of having Win 7. I was shopping online and found Win 7 as well as the Win 7 Upgrade. Can anyone explain for me the difference between the Win 7 and the Win 7 Upgrade?

Hi!

The difference between Win 7 and Win 7 upgrade is that if you’re current system is a Win Vista / Win XP, you can just get the Win 7 upgrade. What this does is it basically uses the components of your current system then upgrades it to Win 7. If you don’t have Win Vista or XP on your PC, say if you’re running a non-Windows operating system ( like Unix ) and you want to install Win 7, then that’s when you need the full Win 7 version. Or say, when you have a new PC that doesn't have an OS yet, then you need to get the full Win 7, not just the upgrade.

If you want to check if your PC can run Windows 7, there is a free application from Microsoft called Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. It will check your system to see if it’s ready for Windows 7. It scans your PC for any hardware, device or application and advises you if there are any potential compatibility issues with Windows 7. You can download the application here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-windows-10

It’s like Microsoft checking if you have a valid and properly licensed software ( win XP / Vista ) and if you do have that, you’ll be able to upgrade to 7. It's probably a good idea to get the upgrade advisor first, check your system to look for any compatibility issues and then do the upgrade. Since you're already on a Windows platform, then the Win7 Upgrade is the way to go.

Hope that helps! Cheers!

Hi Rebecca,

There are two ways to install Windows 7 on your PC. One way is to format your C drive and completely erase everything from it and do a clean install of Windows 7 by using a Windows 7 CD. If you want keep your settings and configurations and upgrade to a windows 7 system, you can however, use Windows 7 upgrade package to install Windows 7 while keeping your settings. Depending on your choice, you have to install either Windows 7 from scratch or Windows 7 upgrade. Make sure to back up your data however, just in case you do something wrong.

I hope that was helpful.

Abe.
