I have used team viewer over the internet to access a remote computer however in my office I have a local network that I need to establish a network connection to my office mates to access their computers, can team viewer do this or do I need a server to assist? I have no clue

Yes you can use Teamviewer within your local LAN. There is no need of any extra servers. You can directly enter the IP address of the remote computer which you want to access. By default, this feature is turned off. But you can turn it on easily by following below instructions.
 
1. In the menu you will find an option Extra. Click on Extra.
2. From extra then click on options
3. In the option there is one tab called General. Click on General to go to the General tab.
4. Activate incoming LAN connections.
This needs to be activated in the destination computer. Now from the source computer using the IP address of the destination computer you can access it.
