Usage of laptop battery throughout the years

I had my laptop for nearly five years now and it was a display model that I got for a discount. During the years, I have seldom shut down my laptop. It is always on. Does that have any effect on the battery lifetime? Also I have it hooked to power adapter with the battery plugged in. Should I remove it?

To keep a laptop on all the time is not a problem at all. But you need to make sure all the hardware is in good condition to support you to be on all the time. Like if your heat shrink is not working properly then your motherboard will be over heated and it may cause dangerous damage to your system. Surely if all the hardwares are in good condition  then turning it on over the years not a problem.

This is a myth that if the laptop is on for the year it damages the battery. There is new technology in the batter which enables to disconnect the battery once it is fully charged. The laptop is directly powered up through the battery. Battery works like an online UPS. Just to provide the connectivity from the power adapter to computer.
