You are worried if after entering the Google API key, a problem that might affect some of your web-related softwares might occur.

Google API key is a code generated for your website directory and all succeeding subdirectories.

It is somewhat like this:

ABQIAAAAzkRtF6BFl0TmeLAxW-_VkxRsz1grPtGzfBiLjpYmsb9Ts2QgaxRSiGrgebK8arWhuOTZP8p1C…

An example of Google API that uses a key is the Google Search API. This API lets you put Google Search on your webpages using a javascript. Although you can use Google Search APIs without a key, it's best recommended to have a key generated for your web site. Google API key allows Google to contact you in the event of any application malfunction or issues arising on using the API. Without it, if a problem occurred and a damage has resulted, you'll be on your own. A single Google API key is valid for 1 web directory and all succeeding subdirectories. For example:

http://www.mygooglesearchssite.com/yoursite/

The key will be usable in all URLs within it.

You need to have an account in Google to be able to generate your Google API key. Google API key is valid only for 1 web directory. If you have other websites, you need to generate additional API keys for the remaining sites.
