I have a small picture 99×99 pixel in size. As I resized that to 500×500 pix, I lost the image quality. How can I retain image quality with resizing images for larger picture?

Before you put into Microsoft Word try to save the picture as a PNG file type then use the resize option to adjust the resolution to the seed size by using Paint or any picture manager that has a resize option.
But still not perfect unless you're going to use some Adobe Photoshop or GIMP.

You can't resize an image to a larger resolution without losing quality. But there are some ways to make it larger but loosing less quality than usual.
Go to this site and upload your image.
Set the parameters and click Resize it button.
You can resize an image up to 6x times for free.

To enlarge an image larger but retain its quality, press Ctrl key and shift key. The image will expand but will not change its clarity.
