Removing hardware mid-transfer of data

I am always told that removing a hardware when a transfer is being made can result in very harmful consequences for my laptop. I have never tried anything of this sort. Can anyone who tried it tell me what the immediate outcome is? Does it do permanent damage to either the hardware or the laptop itself

I tried it many times myself. Actually, your data will be lost.

Suppose you're copying movie to your external drive. Suddenly you removed your external hard drive, but copying is still in process. The movie will not play when you want to watch it from external hard.

In extreme cases your data will be deleted permanently or crashes. It will also harm your computer so do avoid it.

If you need to remove hardware immediately cancel the process and then safely remove it.
