Codenamed “Blue,” Windows 8.1 is an upgrade to the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. Compared to Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 which are the latest Service Packs for these operating systems, Windows 8.1 is also a Service Pack for Windows 8.
Windows 8.1 was released to manufacturing on August 27, 2013 and for general availability on October 17, 2013, just almost a year after the retail release of Windows 8. You can only upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free if you have the retail version of Microsoft Windows 8 or Microsoft Windows RT. If you have Windows 8, upgrading to Windows 8.1 is a must to have a continued support.
But unlike the previous Service Packs that can be downloaded from Windows Update, with Windows 8.1 it is not the same. It has to be downloaded separately. If you have Microsoft Windows 8, download the Windows 8.1 Disc Image (ISO) and upgrade your operating system.
