Hello,

So far this is the codec package that most of us are using http://www.windows7codecs.com/. Open that link and download the codec package which is compatible with the operating systems: Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 2008 & 2003 and also with Microsoft Windows Media Player 9, 10, 11 & 12.

It also supports .mkv, .flv , .mp4 and many more. Be sure to update your operating system before installing and downloading any software for security reasons.

If you simply want to play an MKV file but you don’t have a media player that supports Matroska video format, you don’t need to install an additional codec to be able to play the MKV file. Because even if you managed to install an additional codec with Matroska support, your media player may still be unable to play the MKV file.

If your media player doesn’t support MKV files then you still won’t be able to play it even if you install the codec. If you want to play a Matroska file or an MKV file, you don’t need to install additional codec on your computer. Simply install VLC media player and you will be able to play the MKV file that you have.

VLC media player supports Windows 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows 2008 Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
