What do you mean by a Quantum Computer? What are its features? In what way will it change the traditional computing that includes only 1’s and 0’s?

Quantum Computer A New Invention

Hi

It is a computer that stores information using quantum states of the subatomic particles. It was developed by researchers at the MIT, USA. They built this using five atoms in an ion trap. They have successfully created the world’s first computer that can scale the Shor’s algorithm by adding atoms and lasers to factor large numbers. It has superposition bits i.e. bits that can be 1 and 0 simultaneously. They are called as QUBITS.

A classical computer contains a memory that is composed of bits where every bit is signified by either one (1) or zero (0) whereas in a quantum computer, it keeps a series of qubits. One qubit can signify a one, a zero, or any quantum superposition of those two qubit states. One pair of qubits can be in any quantum superposition of four states.

Three qubits can be in any quantum superposition of eight states. Quantum computing is the area of study centered on developing computer technology according to the principles of quantum theory which describes the behavior and nature of energy and matter on the quantum level or atomic and subatomic level.

The quantum computer which goes by the laws of quantum physics would acquire massive processing power through the ability to be in numerous states and execute tasks using all possible combinations simultaneously. The following are the current centers of research in quantum computing:

  • * MIT
  • * IBM
  • * Oxford University
  • * Los Alamos National Laboratory

The vital elements of quantum computing started with Paul Benioff back in 1981 while working at Argonne National Labs. The development on quantum theory started in 1900 with a presentation by Max Planck to the German Physical Society. In this presentation, he introduced the idea that energy exists in individual or separate units which he called quanta, just like matter.
