I noticed you are using the Vegas Pro Version 8 as reflected from the picture you attached to your posted question. You see, Vegas Pro Version 8 do not support “.MP4” format, you need to download the Vegas Pro Version 10. I believe the free trial is available from their official website. Just browse through their official website because there are websites that offer the software for free but at the end of the download, you will only get an application full of advertisements and worse, viruses. You may be downloading a trial version and needs to pay for the full version but Sony Vegas is worth your money.

According to a post on “Expert Advice: Tips and Tricks” on the Sony Creative Software website titled “Working with a variety of video file types in Vegas Pro”, the supported video file formats for Sony Vegas Pro falls into three categories: files that work right out of the box, files that work after you install a free codec, and files that work after you purchase and install a codec.

If you add a video to your timeline and all you get is an audio but no video, this issue falls on the second category “files that work after you install a free codec”. If you add an MP4 (.mp4) file to your timeline and it only showed an audio but doesn’t have a video, you just need to install a free codec.

One way of fixing this issue is to install a video converter that supports MP4 files. Video converters usually have the video codec for all the video formats they support. So, when you install a video converter that supports MP4 files, you will also install the video codec for MP4 video files. Sony Vegas Pro can use this codec to open the MP4 file you want to edit.

Try using ImTOO MPEG Encoder. It supports conversion of MP4 files as well as AVI, MPEG, DivX, WMV, MOV, FLV, 3GP, PSP MPEG-4, and iPod MPEG-4 including audio formats like MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, and M4A. When you install ImTOO MPEG Encoder, you can use MP4 files on your Vegas Pro timeline without requiring additional codec installation.

There is one Vegas Pro user who is using Sony Vegas Pro 10 and he said version 10 opens MP4 files nicely. But if you have an old computer, MP4 files might not work very well with version 10 because they are so highly compressed. You probably need to use a much faster computer to work with Sony Vegas Pro 10 on MP4 files.

Currently, the latest version is Sony Vegas Pro 13 and it requires 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10. It opens and saves MP4 files. Sony Vegas Pro 13 requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 be installed prior to installing Sony Vegas Pro.
