Your hard drive is infected by virus. This happens when you are not using an antivirus or a good antivirus. I hope your friend is not using any antivirus that is why when he attached this hard to his PC the virus infected your hard drive.

Try to use a good antivirus next time. I will prefer Microsoft Security Essentials.

However to solve this issue go back and attach this hard drive with your friends computer. I hope you will see it working. Try to recover your files under the protection of antivirus. Once all data is recovered format the hard drive and make sure that it is not more infected by virus.

Hi there

It seems your hard disk has some malware activity , You bought not only the hard disk from your friend but also some malwares .
If you don't have an antivirus install it , if it didn't help solving the case ,
just format your hard disk , ( Don't worry i no data will be lost )

Now download stellar phoenix windows data recovery software

I have attached a URL to download it

https://www.stellarinfo.com/

just go to it and download it and then install it ,

Now scan your formatted hard disk with it and you can see all your files in it , now recover everything to your internal hard disk.

after its done put on a system restart and let your external and internal hard disk to dissipate some heat . now turn on your pc and copy the recovered files to your external and its done , Your EXT HDD files are back online .
NOTE :- Be patient recovering is not an easy task , it takes a while .

Hope that solves your case
