Hello,

First of all please make sure, that you have not changed the file name into any incorrect way, accidently. This is saved including .bmp extension.

Try to check about any recent installation of any application which may be effecting to the existing window tools (including paint).

You may go for setting default program used for a particular file.:

  • Goto START << DEFAULT PROGRAM<<Associate a File or Protocol with a Program.
  • Select .bmp file.
  • Look for the associated Default Program
  • Click to "Change Program" and choose "Paint"from the options available.

Hope this will resolve your trouble.

Remember: early versions of Microsoft Paint only supported the BMP format (.bmp). Users with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, or earlier will not be able to open other image files using Microsoft Paint. If you try to use Microsoft Paint and it can’t seem to open a particular image file, use a newer image editor.

Microsoft later added additional image support to Microsoft Paint when Microsoft Windows 98 was released. Windows 98, Windows Millennium, and Windows 2000 come with support for the following image formats:

  • BMP (.bmp)
  • GIF (.gif)
  • JPG (.jpg)
  • JPEG (.jpeg)

BMP files or the bitmap image format is supported by Microsoft Paint. But if you can’t open a file in this format in Microsoft Paint, it can be either corrupt or needs a much newer image editor. Try downloading Adobe Photoshop CS2. On the other hand, if you still can’t open the file with Photoshop, it means the file is damaged.
