For the McAfee to be able to carry out the automatic updates, you will need to make sure that you have set it to updates itself at a certain time in its settings. And even after you have set that, you will need to make sure that you computer is connected to the internet at the time which you set it to carry out the automatic update process, for the process will not be successful otherwise.

You can also set the antivirus to carry out the automatic updates as part of the windows updates, and that means that you will need to set it to update itself automatically when the windows updates are being downloaded and installed on your computer.

I also had that same kind of problem with my old McAfee antivirus. Mine was ok since it has 3 years subscription but similar to you, it doesn’t update automatically. It needs to be updated manually and we all know that antivirus programs need to be updated on a regular basis so it’ll become effective in detecting and removing threats.

My solution to that is to use a different antivirus for my computer since most antivirus programs nowadays are already self-updating. Here are several of the ones you can use:

  • Norton AntiVirus – it supports 32-bit Windows XP [Home, Tablet PC, Professional, Media Center] Service Pack 2 and higher, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista [Starter, Home Premium, Home Basic, Business, Ultimate] Service Pack 1 and up, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 [Starter, Home Premium, Home Basic, Professional, Ultimate], and 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.
  • Norton Internet Security – supports the same system specifications as with Norton AntiVirus. The Norton Pulse feature updates the virus definitions every 5 to 10 minutes and it happens without affecting your computing activity. The Insight plus Optimized File Copy feature helps you identify which files are safe and will only scan unknown files.
  • McAfee Internet Security – it supports 32-bit Windows XP Service Pack 3, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista Service Pack 1, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8, and 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8.1.
  • Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 – it already applies cloud-based protection for a rapid response to the surfacing of new malware. The Kaspersky Security Network or KSN is cloud-based that constantly collects information on new malware threats from millions of consenting users’ PCs.
