Hi,

Is your computer a branded computer like HP, Dell, Toshiba, IBM, Lenovo and Gateway? If it is, then chances are your computer came with an onboard diagnostics tool that you can use to determine if there's a faulty hardware in your computer in case there are problems. If your computer did come with one, try running a hard drive diagnostic test. If it passes, try running a full system diagnostics test and see if it finds anything. Sometimes, when hard drive start making a clicking sound, it's an indication that it will fail really soon, so back up your files while you still have access.

Thank you. Hope it helps.

Hello there! If your hard drive is making noise that you never heard before like grinding or squealing, it only indicates that it is close to.. break off. Here is what you can do before all else fails:

  1. Run a diagnostic test to see the areas in your hard drive that are failing. This will not fix the hard drive that is physically failing but will stop the computer from using the bad areas in the future.

  2. If this do not resolve the hard drive noise, start backing up your system and replace it immediately.

  3. If running the diagnostic software works, take note that the hard drive will still fail in the future.

If your computer gets stuck or freezes and you hear clicks on the hard drive, it is a sign of a physical problem in the hard drive. The only solution here is to check the hard drive for errors. The clicking sound is often the sign of bad sectors on the drive. Download PC Tools Performance Toolkit and install it.

Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives”. On the next screen, select the drive you want to check. From the options, select “Surface Scan” and check “Perform on reboot”. Click “Start” then “Continue”. Exit PC Tools then restart the computer to begin the check.

The checking will be quite long depending on the size of the drive and the extent of the problem. If bad sectors were found, try repeating the scan a second time. Bad sectors are normal for hard drives like IDE and SATA and usually appear as the drive gets old.

If bad sectors appear everywhere on the drive and the drive is quite old, it means you need to replace the drive with a new one.
