Hi,

I am using Microsoft Office 2010. Recently I started having a problem with MS Word. It won't start. I tried reinstalling but it didn't work. Other office applications are working fine. It's only MS Word which is giving trouble.

Can anyone please help me?

Hey Darek,

At first, you have to find out the reason which is causing the startup problem.

There are two main reason  for this problem usually:

  • Corrupt Global template
  • Misconfigured add-in.

To check if it is:

  • Press start button and select  run
  • type "winword.exe /a" (without the quotes).
  • If word launches fine then you can be sure that the problem is cause by those two.

Thanks for the valuable suggestion mate.

And yes, according to your method, it is the corrupt template or add-in problem. Because writing that command in "run" started MS Word.

So what should I do next?

Now close MS Word and search for a ".dot " file named "normal.dot" in your computer. It's a system file so, it may be hidden. First show up every hidden file, from folder option and then search for it.

Once you find it, just delete that file. MS Word will create a fresh one, when you start it again and will hopefully launch fine.

I don't get it. It worked fine the first time.

But when I started MS Word for the second time to recheck , it refused to start !!!

Don't be lost my friend. There is still another way to solve ;).

Lets see if it helps you.

Go to : c:WindowsApplication dataMicrosoftwordStartup.

*Note: if you are on Win 2000 or hire, then you should look for the application data folder in your current user profile or all users folder.

If there are any file(s) in the startup folder, back them all up to another location/folder and check if MS Word launches. If yes, then copy and paste them back to the startup folder, one by one, to find out the black sheep. Once found delete it.
