Try the following workarounds and see if it will work. First of all, format the flash drive and make a folder out of it. Name that folder as autorun.inf. And then launch the newly created folder and open your Notepad. Make a Notepad document and right-click and select New and then Text Document. Give it a name which will be replaced with special characters afterwards.

Launch the Character Map software by clicking on Start and then All Programs> System Tools and then click on Character Map. Choose any existing font such as Unicode, Lucida Sans Unicode, Arial Unicode and then scroll it down and look for characters on Korean, Chinese or Japanese or any other odd characters. Select 4 or 5 characters and then copy and change the name of the Notepad file that you created a while ago. The filename will be changed and afterwards you will see characters like boxes or other symbols.

And then modify the attributes of the hidden autorun.inf folder you just created. Launch the Command Prompt and then browse to the drive where you stored the flash drive. Type attrib+s+h autorun.inf. The importance of this is the logic that the Windows could not read two files simultaneously and since the current flash drive autorun.inf name, a new file could not be possible and the virus could not utilize the autorun.inf.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to make a USB flash drive immune to any kind of virus. Like any kind of storage media, a USB flash drive is also susceptible to all forms of viruses. If you insert your USB flash drive to any computer very frequently, the chance of getting the drive infected is high.

If you insert an infected USB flash drive on your computer, there’s a big chance of transferring the infection to your local hard drive if you don’t have a good antivirus program because of the operating system’s autoplay function in drives.

By default, when you insert a disk like a USB flash drive or an external hard drive or any storage media like microSD card or CD or DVD on a computer that runs Microsoft Windows, the drive will autoplay or autostart. Autoplay means Microsoft Windows will run the drive automatically.

You will be prompted by a dialog and you need to select whether to explore the drive or open it with media player and other options. If the drive contains a file called “autorun.inf”, Windows will run the file automatically and if the file is linked to an infected program, the infection starts automatically.

That’s why it is very important to scan a USB flash drive before exploring or copying its contents.
