Lost connection after reformatting laptop

I am using a NETGEAR router at home with my desktop PC. My laptop can connect to it through an RJ45 cable wire. And I never had any problems with it for the whole time of using it. When my laptop had a virus, I re-installed my Windows XP but the problem is I cannot connect to the router again. The error is stating that the LAN has been unplugged. Am I missing any software or is there an issue with the router itself? Help please.

The thing is you reinstalled windows XP, and therefore you lost all the network connection settings and therefore you will need to configure them again for to be able to access the internet and connect to the network. You can do that as follows:

  • On your computer, double click on the network identity button in the task bar.
  • In the window that will open, click on properties.
  • In the next window, click on internet protocol version 4, or version 6 depending on the one you are using on your network.
  • Configure the settings appropriately; the IP address, subnet mask, DNS servers and the gateway and the save the changes.
  • Exit the window.
  • Try connecting to the internet.

Since you have configures the settings you should able to successfully connect to the internet.

Hello,

You are the right place for your solution.

You are using NETGEAR or any Network device. You are using RJ45 connector system mean direct cable connection.

For the effect of Virus you just re-Install your OS (Windows XP) but do you Install all of your drivers (LAN) ?

Please again check your LAN. (Right Click on "My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager" Then see network Adapter is it installed ? or it's on Other device? Please confirm LAN Installed. Then must again check cable.

If you are using router with DHCP then no need to configure LAN. Because it will automatically otherwise configure your LAN "Like – IP : 192.168.1.21, Gateway, DNS etc.

I hope it will work better.
