If you use Microsoft Office Outlook as email client, there may come a time when the Outlook data file can get corrupted. If Microsoft Office Outlook can’t open a set of folders and you think the Outlook Data File is damaged (.pst or .ost), you can use the Inbox Repair tool or “SCANPST.EXE” to check and repair errors in the data file.

To begin checking the problem, first, close Microsoft Office Outlook if it is running. Next, open Windows Explorer then navigate to one of these locations:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 – C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2010 – C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2013 – C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2016 – C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16

Next, look for “SCANPST.EXE” then double-click it. On the next screen, select “Browse” then navigate to the location of the PST or OST file (.pst or .ost) and select it. To locate these files, in Microsoft Office Outlook, go to “File”, “Account Settings” then “Account Settings”. Go to “Data Files” tab.

Here, the Outlook Data Files (.pst) and Offline Data Files (.ost) are listed along with the name of the account the files are associated with. Take note of their locations. Once the file is located and selected, click “Start” to begin the scan. If the scan finds errors, click “Repair” to start fixing them.

When the repair is complete, start Microsoft Office Outlook with the profile associated with the Outlook Data File you just repaired.
