You should first of all know that there’s difference between password protecting external hard drive and password protecting a folder in external hard drive. Mostly external hard drives come with a password encrypter but you can use third party software too.
To password protect external hard drive, You just have to following the following steps :

1. Download an encryption program.
2. Install it.
3. Plug in the external hard drive.
4. Open the software.

6. Type the password.
7. Format the drive.
8. Select it to encrypt it.
