Hi Law,

I find your question lacking. If I would know what kind of OS (Operating System) your computer is running and what Generation of your iPod is; I could give you a definite answer to your query.

If you can answer these questions, I can help you better:

1. Is your computer a Windows computer? What kind of OS? an XP? a Vista?

2. What version of iTunes do you have? (If your computer is a Mac, you can check this by opening your iTunes and clicking on iTunes > about iTunes; If your computer is a Windows, you can check it by opening your iTunes and clicking on Help > about iTunes)

3. Are you getting an error message when you connect your iPod to your computer? What is it saying?

For now, you can check this link for more support on both your iPod and iTunes.

Steve Rogers

The earliest or oldest version of iTunes was version 4.1 released in October 16, 2003, 10 years ago. If your computer is running on the oldest Microsoft Windows operating system like Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium, I think there is no chance of installing it on your computer.

Even the earliest version of iTunes doesn’t support any of these platform versions. The oldest possible edition where you can install iTunes is Microsoft Windows 2000 using the very first version, iTunes 4.1. I wish you mentioned the operating system you are using so we can evaluate if it is compatible with any of the versions of iTunes.

If you are not using Windows XP, the nearest and oldest possible version applicable for iTunes is Microsoft Windows 2000. So, if your computer doesn’t have the capacity to run Windows XP, you should have at least Windows 2000 otherwise you won’t be able to install iTunes. Here are several of the earliest iTunes versions for Windows 2000:

  • iTunes 4.1 – supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP and released in October 16, 2003. Visit iTunes 4.1 for Windows.
  • iTunes 4.2 – supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP and released in December 18, 2003. Visit iTunes 4.2 for Windows.
  • iTunes 4.6 – supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP and released in June 9, 2004. Visit iTunes 4.6 for Windows.
  • iTunes 4.7 – supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP and released in October 27, 2004. Visit iTunes 4.7 for Windows.
