Hello Mandy miller, I have read your issue about the security settings and updates of iPhone. The parts of security settings are the “Passcode” this is where you lock and unlock your device with your desired PIN. We have the “Erase Data” so when you lost your iPhone or if it has been stolen, this security setting allows 10 PIN attempts if it fails then your device will go back to its default settings. Make sure to enable the “Find my IPhone/iPad” so even if you misplaced or lost your device you have an easy access. The “Backup Encryption” which is in iTunes is to encrypt your device. And for your updates just make sure to get the latest version of iOS form Apple. You can get this through iTunes and it will give you most of the updates always

Some iPhone security settings are:

1. Enabling the Auto-Lock Feature – It is the most basic security function that locks the iPhone touch screen after not being used for some time. It is set to turn on by default but you can always change the settings by tapping the Settings icon and then go to the General tab and click Auto-Lock. Just choose your desired time period and exit the Auto-Lock screen.

2. Passcode Lock – This feature disable the iPhone screen after a period of time that you did not use your phone. But when the device displays the lock, it will ask you to enter your four-digit code before you can use your iPhone again. To activate the Passcode Lock, tap the Settings icon and then select the General tab and choose Passcode Lock. Then turn the Passcode Lock On to enable it.

3. Using the Wi-Fi feature securely – This feature will let you connect to a wireless network. When you connect your iPhone to a network, you will be asked for a network password if the connection that you are trying to connect has enabled the Wi-Fi security.

4. Usage Restrictions – Users can always set iPhone restrictions by blocking explicit content to be viewed on the iPhone's music or video player. Parents can also block access to YouTube and other applications.

To download updates, you will need to connect your iPhone to your computer and download the updates through iTunes.
