Yes  Margaret, the iPhone 5 will be 7.6mm thick which is thinner than the Galaxy S3( 8.6 mm thick).

The thinnest smart phone is the Finder from Oppo company in china.

It is 6.65 mm thick. It is the world's record holder for thinnest smartphone after it beat Huawei Ascend P 1 S (6.7 mm thick)

iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 are the two most successful smartphones of 2012 and they even tied up when it comes to reviews made by consumers and technology experts.

They may look and feel differently, but there’s one thing that makes people go crazy over these gadgets – they claim to be thinner than their predecessors and even other brand of smartphones. iPhone 5 measures 7.6mm thick, with its battery and casing attached.

Samsung on the other hand, measures 8.6mm thick, with its battery and casing attached as well.

So if you’re planning to buy one of these and prefer the thinnest, then I suggest you go with iPhone 5.

However, even before these two were released, Huawei has already made the claim on having the world’s thinnest phone through its Ascend P1 S, which measures 6.68mm. But this year, the world’s thinnest smartphone crown goes to Alcatel after unveiling their newest gadget, the One Touch Idol Ultra, boasting a measurement of 6.45mm thickness.
