Hello,

I reside in a place where temperature exceeds 35 degrees Celsius. I heard that there are processors that could not withstand heat especially in a 24 hour operation. What kind of processor will you recommend for Home servers? Should I use Intel or AMD?

For me the best CPU for Servers is definitely Intel. Not only that they are colder than AMD, but they are also silent. You said that you average temperature is above 35 degrees Celsius, that is not a problem for Intel, probably the CPU temperature will be somewhere around 30-35 degrees and that is really good. AMD is hotter and will work at 60 degrees and that is kind of high. The only downside to Intel is that its price is higher than AMD, and I advise you to buy a cooler aside from the one that you receive with your CPU.

Hello Kristan.

Kindly be more specific as to what type of "home server" you would like to set up.  Is it a media centre where you store all photos, movies and other stuff for access via network?  Or will it be set up as a web server just like some people host their sites at home?  Will it be a download server for downloading files 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Anyways, other factors to consider aside from operating temperature are performance and power consumption.

Intel's Atom processors offer the lowest power consumption (and consequently the lowest operating temperature).  However, it suffers from poor performance if you ever need to run CPU-intensive applications like if you will use your server for streaming media.

My suggestion is to get a Sempron 140 or Sempron 145 which is a single-core solution that has the perfect balance of performance, low operating temperature and low power consumption.  You can even set up your "home server" to serve multiple purposes such as media center, HTPC, download server and even a light web server all at the same time and it will not choke.

Hope this helps!
